Headlights provide light for us drivers at night, when we most need them. Yet these clear headlights are left outdoors along with your vehicle to weather away into a faded sun-damaged foggy opaque pieces of plastic. Today’s cars can survive outdoors for years without paint damage. Unlike in the old days, car interiors today could withstand a decade of being parked outdoors without any protection, and no visible damage would be detected, not even on dashboards. Until now automobile manufacturers have not found a solution to prevent headlights from fading, while still providing design flexibility and maintaining the safety requirements of the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Since the mid 1990’s cars have been produced with plastic headlight lenses. These changes brought with them amazing headlight designs that were not possible with glass headlight lenses and sealed beam headlights as per DOT requirements at the time. Just look around you, cars these days are powered by different types of headlights, Laser headlights, LED headlights, xenon headlights, and halogen / projector headlights. LED is pretty wide spread these days and highly sought after. While xenon headlights maybe obsolete on newer production cars. Laser headlights as well as taillights are found on top end luxury vehicles, like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series, Bentley, and Rolls Royce.

As the technology gets cheaper, more and more less luxurious cars will have laser powered headlights. Today, high end luxury pickup trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and the Ford F-150 use high end LED headlights and will probably start using laser ones at some point. Halogen headlights, the cheap alternative, still power many cars until this day while providing good enough visibility given that you headlight lenses do not suffer sun damage.

At some point no matter how you’re vehicle’s headlights are powered, the outer headlight plastic lens is produced out of plastic. Guess what happens to plastic after prolonged exposure to sunlight? You guessed it right, headlights fade, yellow, oxidize, what ever you want to call it. Headlights, specifically the out portion of the headlights, the lens covers become cloudy and get in the way of the light from the light source from protruding outside of the headlight assembly, reducing your visibility.
